During a Lincolnshire County Council Flood and Water Management Scrutiny Committee meeting last month, it was reported that multiple extreme weather events over the past year will cost around £45 million to repair.

The impacts of flooding particularly following Storms Babet and Henk have affected roads, agricultural land, 876 properties with internal flooding to living space, 264 investigations commissioned, and in addition over 600 near miss reports received.

The Council is closely monitoring further flood risk, while ensuring plans are in place to work with partners should further action be needed.

It is understood that the Environment Agency has secured around £16 million from the existing capital budget towards repairs between now and March 2025.

Councillor Colin Davie, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, Environment and Planning, said:

“Any new government is going to have to prioritise in a much greater way strategic investment into infrastructure related to flood management,” he said.

“It is no longer acceptable that we can spend tens of billions of pounds investing in green technologies if we don’t address the outcomes of weather impacts and climate change that are happening today.

“We need a greater investment into this area than any government has previously made, and at the moment I can’t see where the commitment to this investment is coming from across the political spectrum.”
