Located in the heart of Alconbury village, the memorial hall is a hub of community spirit, accommodating gatherings for up to 300 guests. Beyond hosting events, it serves as an emergency refuge, notably during the 2020 floods when the hall and surrounding areas were inundated with water.
In response, the Alconbury Brook Flood Group, in partnership with the Alconbury Parish Council, Silver Fern Agri, Abercore, and GreenBlue Urban, installed 22 Hydroplanter units filled with Arborsoil Hydro Max around the hall. These units act as large, drained soakaways to filter water and prevent flooding.
Recent tests with 20mm of rain have shown the effectiveness of these installations, ensuring the car park remains flood-free and accessible – Alconbury Newsletter May 2024

The success of these projects is a testament to the community’s collective effort. With funding from Anglian Water and the hard work of Silverfern Agri, at least 25 volunteers worked over two weekends on the project. This collaborative effort has transformed the area.
The Green-Blue Rainwater Garden Project is another exciting development on the horizon. With support from the GreenBlue Urban team, further planning and preparations are underway. The project promises to enhance the village’s resilience against flooding and contribute to the overall improvements of the area.
The collaborative efforts to address flooding issues are a brilliant success story of how local groups can work with authorities, councils, and landowners to solve significant problems. As future projects develop, the hall remains a pivotal part of Alconbury’s community life, embodying the spirit of cooperation and forward thinking.
