On 26 March 2024, the Welsh Government approved the Full Business Case (FBC) submitted by Conwy County Borough Council for the Llandudno Coastal Improvements Scheme with a possible investment of up to £5.2m.

In Llandudno, up to 4,982 residential properties and 1,056 commercial properties are considered at risk of coastal flooding in the next 50 years, and these will benefit from this investment in reducing flood risk.

The proposed scheme will make improvements to the current defence system at known weak points and provide a more reliable and consistent standard of protection for Llandudno. The project will also address the risk of existing defences being outflanked during storms.

The scheme includes improvements to the coastal defences at both North and West Shores. The work includes strengthening the existing 1.8km seawall at North Shore promenade, as well as extending the low level seawall by 200m in length and constructing a new flood gate at the eastern end of the promenade. At West Shore, a 45m length of new seawall will be constructed, as well as modifications and repairs to the existing seawall and highway to reduce the potential of flooding in a significant coastal storm event.

The relevant consents and permissions have been obtained where required.

The scheme will benefit from up to 85% funding from Welsh Government under the Coastal Risk Management Programme (CRMP), with the remaining 15% from Conwy County Borough Council capital funding.

A public information session will be held in the coming months to explain the project to the local community, with construction scheduled to start in Autumn 2024.
