A £13m flood defence project is now underway to over protection to a length of coastline at Kinmel Bay. The coastal defences along this part of the coast are inconsistent and were not designed to account for climate change and the accompanying increase in sea levels.

14,000 tonnes of rock from North Wales quarries were delivered last month, to be placed as rock armour. The contractors, Jones Bros, has started raising sections of the sea will with pre-cast wall units, as well as improving the access points to the beach.

Whilst there is existing rock armour in place at Towyn Revetment, and it is in a good state of repair, the level or protection offered is inadequate. The plan is to raise and widen the rock armour, raise the seawall by 500 to 750mm,and replace two flood gates, which will offer increased protection will be offered to the community.

The project is being funded by the Welsh Government Coastal Risk Management Programme (85%) and Conwy County Borough Council (15%). It is expected to be completed in Spring 2026.
