The $90.4 million American Canal Lower Reach Replacement Project, managed by the U.S. International Boundary and Water Commission (USIBWC), is making significant strides in rehabilitating the ageing 1930s-era concrete canal. The project focuses on repairing leaks and modernising infrastructure to secure reliable irrigation and municipal water delivery for the region.

As part of the upgrade, Flood Control International (FCI) was contracted to manufacture and supply two removable barriers for the canal. These single-span barriers are designed to provide a cut-off channel, allowing storm water to flow into the Rio Grande while remaining removable to facilitate cleaning and access to the new canal structures.

The barriers feature specially reinforced aluminium beams that can span 10 feet at a depth of 6 feet. The components are connected for easier installation and removal, ensuring both efficiency and durability in managing water flow.

Commenting on the project, FCI CEO Tim Collingwood said: “We’re proud to contribute our expertise to this important project. These removable barriers demonstrate how engineering innovation can improve water management while maintaining accessibility for maintenance and future infrastructure upgrades. It’s a great example of how practical design and long-term thinking can work together to protect vital water resources.”

This collaboration highlights innovative engineering solutions that balance functionality, maintenance access, and flood management in critical water infrastructure projects.
