Flood Control International is proud to highlight the successful performance of its mechanical sliding flood gates at Criterion Bridge, Paeroa, during the recent Ohinemuri River rise. Designed and installed by Flood Control International in 2018, these gates are a key component of Paeroa’s flood resilience infrastructure, protecting homes, businesses, farmland, and critical transport routes.
The 21.3m x 2.73m double-leaf sliding flood gates were custom-engineered to provide rapid deployment in just 20 minutes, offering reliable protection against rising water levels while allowing emergency teams and local authorities to respond safely. The system replaces temporary flood barriers that previously had to be built manually during each event, ensuring faster response times and reducing risk to both people and property.
“This is exactly what we designed the gates for – to perform in real-world extreme conditions and safeguard the community,” said Tim Collingwood, CEO at Flood Control International Ltd. “Seeing them in action reinforces the importance of investing in resilient, engineered flood protection systems.”

During recent weather events, including the January 2026 river rise, the Criterion Bridge gates successfully held back peak flows, enabling local civil defence and transport authorities to manage road and bridge access safely. The gates have now proven themselves multiple times since their installation, including during Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023, demonstrating consistent performance under high-stress conditions.
The sliding gate system is part of a wider programme to improve flood resilience across the Waikato region, and Flood Control International remains committed to providing innovative solutions to mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events. The company has over 30 years of experience designing, manufacturing, and installing flood defence infrastructure worldwide, tailoring each solution to local conditions and risk profiles.
“This project is a great example of how engineering innovation can make a real difference to communities,” added Ray Moulds. “Our team continues to take pride in delivering systems that protect lives, property, and infrastructure during extreme events.”
