FloodSax are the first alternative sandbags that can be used both outside and inside … and the Yorkshire company that devised them has now sold 3 million worldwide.
When dry, FloodSax are very flat with a large surface area, so can absorb escapes of water and leaks inside, but once immersed in water, they are transformed into tough sandless sandbags, robust enough to keep torrential floodwater at bay outside.
In their dry state, FloodSax are ultra-thin and super-absorbent, so they are highly effective at soaking up water inside homes and businesses, especially in hard-to-reach places such as beneath pipes, radiators, sinks and boilers.
They also absorb floodwater dripping in through leaky roofs and windows. This prevents water from spreading and causing damage to floors, electrics, plasterboard and furniture, along with fixtures and fittings.
FloodSax are turned into instant sandless sandbags simply by fully immersing them in water. The FloodSax absorbs around 20 litres in about 5 minutes and retains it, transforming the FloodSax from being as light as a pillowcase to being more effective than traditional sandbags.
But unlike old-style sandbags, FloodSax have a uniform shape, which makes them quick and easy to build into protective walls to prevent water from getting into properties or to divert it away from them down drains.
They are now used worldwide in homes, businesses, hospitals, public buildings, universities, waste management companies and main retailers such as supermarkets, where they soak up spills and leaks or water leaking from faulty refrigeration units, preventing damage and slip hazards for staff and customers, so are ideal for health and safety.

Lucy Bailey from FloodSax said: “FloodSax are the original sandless sandbag, and we are now finding that people are using them as much inside their homes and businesses as they are outside.
“By soaking up internal escapes of water and floods, they save a fortune in flood damage, not to mention the tens of thousands of pounds of damage they prevent when used as fully-inflated sandless sandbags outside.
“Councils have absolutely no responsibility to provide sandbags or any other kind of anti-flooding devices – it really is everyone’s responsibility to protect their own home or business from flooding, both inside and out and FloodSax are the first sandless sandbag designed to do the two roles.
“They are a real game-changer for the industry and as they come in vacuum-packed bags of five, they are incredibly space-saving to store.
“Being prepared for flooding day and night all year round is vital, and with FloodSax that means you’re constantly ready and have that all-important peace of mind, especially as flooding happens so incredibly quickly, usually leaving people very little time to react.
“It’s an effective way to avoid the trauma, misery and terrible expense of dealing with a major flood and all the horrendous damage it causes, along with the hassle of dealing with insurance companies, loss adjusters, and then trying to find reputable and trusty tradespeople to repair the damage.
“It often means people who have been flooded are forced out of their homes for many months, often over a year.
“A lot of this can be avoided simply by having a box 20 FloodSax, which usually costs under £150.”
